Don’t look now, but there is no shortage of people overseas who positively hate our guts, and would gladly launch catastrophic attacks on U.S. soil if they had half a chance. This trend appears to be growing, even as Leftists in America work ceaselessly to disarm private citizens.
The Defense Intelligence Agency revealed today that, in the 1990s, North Korean commando units trained to attack U.S. nuclear plants:
According to the report, the “Reconnaissance Bureau, North Korea, had agents in place to attack American nuclear power plants.”
The document states that the North Korean Ministry of People’s Armed Forces, the ministry in charge of the military, “established five liaison offices in the early 1990s, to train and infiltrate operatives into the United States to attack nuclear power plants and major cities in case of hostilities.”
The reason we know this is because the DIA just declassified this report. Intelligence like this is often declassified when it becomes “old news”. Given North Korea’s growing belligerence toward the U.S. since then, this rogue state undoubtedly has assets on American soil, poised to strike at us, right now.
Of course, attacks by crazed North Korean commandos on nuclear power plants would probably be hailed by addlebrained American Lefties and other burned-out hippie-types who, after all, abhor all things nook-you-lar.
The recent, massive cyber attacks on Sony Pictures clearly illustrates that the North Koreans are ready, willing and able to do damage to Americans. With Sony, the damage was financial … and social. Sony co-chair Amy Pascal will never work in Hollywood again – not after making e-mailed jokes about Obama’s favorite movie being “Django”. Her shameless and public ass-kissing of the reprehensible Al Sharpton, I fear, will avail her not
ISIS/ISIL/Islamic State continues to pose a grave threat to Americans here at home. Persons living here have joined this death cult, and have traveled to the Middle East to fight with them. The converse is also true: Islamic State has been recruiting actors in America (and in other Western nations), undoubtedly to use them to launch attacks both in America, and in places like Australia, where a Muslim cleric recently staged a hostage takeover of a Sidney cafe, resulting in the deaths of multiple innocents.
This attack in Australia, along with a foiled Jihadist plan to decapitate Australians en masse, has caused many to reconsider the wisdom of having a disarmed public.
But progressivist Western regimes overseas continue to blanche at the idea of having armed citizens around. Here at home, our own progressivist regime continues to push for the elimination of private gun ownership, often through astroturf proxies like the Brady Campaign, Everytown For Gun Safety, and Moms Demand Action.
Liberals seem to live in a fantasy world where bad things almost never happen; and when they do happen, why, the police or the army – the almighty State, in other words – is right there Johnny-on-the-spot to make it all better.
Like most people, I’ve spent a lot of time in malls recently, shopping for Christmas presents. Assuming private citizens were not allowed to own and carry firearms, what would happen if a squad of Islamic State terrorists marched in with AK-47s and started spraying bullets? All of the malls I’ve visited had security – unarmed security, that is. Fat guys in white shirts, and scrawny little guys in white shirts. Their badges were shiny, and they had walkie-talkies … but really, what good would that do against even halfway determined, lightly-armed attackers?
I struck up a conversation with one, a willowy little guy with startled-looking, protuberant eyes. Barney Fife, but without even a single round in his pocket to put in the nonexistent .38 six-shooter on his bony hip. After I flashed my retirement badge and credentials, I asked him about how much trouble they have at that particular mall. There are juvenile shoplifters, he told me, and the occasional fistfight. He mentioned that when such things occur, he just calls the cops, and lets them handle it.
“They get here pretty quick?” I asked.
“Oh,” he said, “we’re out here, kind of on the edge of town. I’ve seen it take 15 or 20 minutes for a cop to respond to trouble. Until the cops show up,” he said, with tremorous bravado, “it’s just me, y’know?”
I didn’t have the heart to ask him what his plan was if something Really Bad ever occurred.
Progressives, liberals and other government-intervention fans argue that armed citizens should not “play cop” if something Really Bad occurs in their presence. They say that we serfs lack the proper training to act decisively.
Yet, when I was a police firearm instructor, poor marksmanship and a lack of firearms maintenance by the rank and file never ceased to amaze me. Most of the cops I trained were so-so shooters. There were some that probably had no business carrying a pistol; the sorts of guys you had to coach and coax through multiple re-shoots just to achieve a minimum qualification score. There were often mechanical malfunctions, too. I once helped a peer clean his stuttering Glock, a weapon he’d carried for almost three years, and one that he had never field stripped for cleaning because he didn’t know how to take it apart.
By contrast, the civilian shooters I now hang with – mostly IPSC and IDPA shooters, all of whom carry concealed – could outshoot just about every cop I ever shared a firing range with. And since they consider their weapons as something more than just a particularly heavy part of their uniform, their weapons are kept in an immaculate state of maintenance.
And anyway, there’s nothing magical about defensive shooting. It involves:
- Finding cover, if possible.
- Drawing the weapon from its holster.
- Lining up the sights on the bad guy.
- Pulling the trigger, while keeping the sights aligned on the bad guy.
- Repeating the last two steps if needed.
There is skill involved, certainly, developed by practice. But it ain’t quantum physics, either. Civilian shooters can and do excel at this. The police and military don’t have magical abilities that the rest of us lack. Nor are their training regimens beyond the reach of mere mortals. Or civilians either, for that matter.
Considering all the threats facing us Americans – threats which seem to grow more severe with each passing month – it is perfectly reasonable that private citizens should be armed with semiautomatic pistols and rifles against the inevitability that something Really Bad will sooner or later occur. Talk about “gun sense” in America!
When these Really Bad things occur, chances are the police – with their SWAT gear, their armor, and their government-supplied, selective-fire weapons – will be late to the game. How many people can a maniac murder in a minute, let alone in the 20 minutes it takes the cops to arrive at the scene of a mere fistfight between hooligans at an upscale shopping mall?
Quite a few, unless a citizen first responder corks him at the onset of his attack.
During the Revolutionary War, citizen-soldiers were called Minutemen. It was a good idea then, and it is still a good idea, considering the maniacal foes we have in places like the Middle East and North Korea.
Gun-haters just don’t seem to understand there are people and groups out there who wish to do us harm – as we do business, as we shop, as we pick up the kids from school. Lefties say we should “empathize” with foreign no-goodniks. I wish these chuckleheads the best of luck with their oblivious, la-ti-dah worldview.
But I fear that one day, in the not-too-distant future, while they’re blissfully going about their daily routines, empathizing all over the place, harsh reality is going to jump up and bite them squarely in the ass.
